GPU Applications

ANSYS® and NVIDIA® work collaboratively to ensure the fastest performance for simulations running on ANSYS parallel software. Available since ANSYS 15.0 release, NVIDIA GPU acceleration enables faster results for more efficient computation and job turnaround times, delivering more license utilization for the same investment.

ANSYS solutions that support GPU accelerators for faster computational performance include:
  • Structural Mechanics: ANSYS® Mechanical® supports a full feature set.
  • Fluid Dynamics: ANSYS® Fluent® offers GPU support for pressure-based coupled solver and for radiation heat transfer models. Other pressure-coupled solver-based fluid solutions where GPU acceleration is supported include: ANSYS Polyflow for polymer and glass processing with as many as 10 million elements and ANSYS Icepak for electronics cooling simulation.
  • Electronics: ANSYS HFSS for both frequency and time-domain electromagnetic analysis. ANSYS HFSS SBR+ solvers for installed antenna performance simulations. ANSYS EMIT for radio frequency intereference (RFI) in complex environments. ANSYS DesignerSI for signal-integrity, power-integrity and EMI analysis.

All HPC license products (HPC, HPC Packs, and HPC Workgroups) enable GPUs. Specifically, each GPU is treated the same as a single CPU core with respect to license requirements. As a result, more simulations are possible with existing HPC licenses combined with NVIDIA GPUs for dramatically increasing simulation productivity.

Note: HPC Enterprise doesn't exist anymore (it can be represented by WAN-ing of Workgroup).

ANSYS® provides significant performance speedups when using NVIDIA Quadro GP100, Quadro K6000 or the Tesla K40 active GPUs in workstations and Tesla P100 or Tesla K80 in servers. The new NVIDIA® Quadro® GP100 combines unprecedented double precision performance with 16 GB of high-bandwidth memory (HBM2), so users can conduct simulations during the design process and gather realistic multi-physics simulations faster than ever before.

"ANSYS is investing deeply in GPUs as a powerful accelerator technology, which is why ANSYS has expanded its NVIDIA GPU support to the new Tesla and Quadro cards," said Wim Slagter, Director of HPC & Cloud Marketing. "Preliminary studies with the new Tesla P100 and Quadro GP100 cards show that our customers can cut the time for typical ANSYS Mechanical models in half, enabling them to innovate products faster across the entire life cycle."

ANSYS® Fluent® 17.0 features multi-GPU support to deliver higher productivity in CFD simulations. This performance enhancement is the result of innovative GPU-accelerated solvers developed by NVIDIA in collaboration with ANSYS (called AmgX) and the license scheme in ANSYS. The implementation in Fluent accelerates pressure-based coupled flow solver, speeding up the flow portion of CFD simulations. This benefit can simply be unlocked by adding Tesla P100 GPUs to any existing HPC infrastructure. It is designed to run across multiple nodes with multiple GPUs in a cluster configuration, just like CPU systems. Please refer to the NVIDIA application note on Accelerating ANSYS Fluent 17.0 Using NVIDIA GPUs for more details on using GPUs in Fluent 17.0
