Boot Camp: sustained training, bringing together all players in the same location for several days.
Line-up: of players who compete in matches, a kind of 5 Majors or ‘A’ team.
FPS (First Person Shooter): Type of action game where the player sees everything from a first-person perspective (Counter-Strike, Quake, Unreal Tournament etc).
RTS (Real Time Strategy):Type of game where the player assumes the role of a general charged with developing his base, manufacturing combat units and destroying his adversary (Warcraft III, Age of Mythology, Command & Conquer etc).
Demo: a playable section of a game.
Ping: delay in milliseconds between commands given by a player and their application on a game server. Everything possible must be done to reduce this latency time to the minimum (of the order of 10 ms on LAN).
Maplist: the game cards which participants can choose from as arenas for confrontation.
Build order: order in which a player constructs his buildings in order to maximise production in line with his game strategy.
Actions per minute (APM): number of clicks and keystrokes executed per minute. This statistic gives an idea of the intensity of a match and the style of the players involved.
Micro-management: the way in which a player finely controls his units, for example in order to optimise their combat effectiveness.
Macro-management: the overall manner in which a player manages his units and the development of his bases.
Artificial intelligence (AI): default behaviour of units, programmed into the game, to give basic reactions and potentially to simulate a confrontation with another player.
Gameplay: the way in which the gamer can interact with other elements in the game.
MOD: modification to a game, either allowing certain elements to be revised or completely modifying the whole game. CounterStrike is a prime example of a mod of the game Half-life. It uses the engine of this game to create a new one which is completely different from the original.
OSP: tournament mod for Quake 3, including warm-up modes and optimised visualisation options for competition.
Lock: to control the map by dominating zones where bonuses appear and collecting them so as to prevent the enemy from re-gaining the advantage.
Gun round: first game of each round, where both teams have only basic weapons. Whoever wins this game has a good chance of dominating in the next two games.
Eco round: game where a team having the worst of it decides not to buy any weapons in order to have a better weapons arsenal in the next game.
